How to make hair smooth and thinner at ends?

im a 15 year old girl and my hair is wavyish. whenever i get it cut, it looks good and the ends, smooth and flat, like normal hair. but whenever it starts to grow out again, like an inch past my shoulders, it becomes prickly at the ends and since my hair is thick, it looks really bad at the ends. instead of being smooth and flat, it ends about an inch thick, and is prickly at the ends. i do not straighten my hair, exept my side bangs on school days. how should i ask my hair stylist to cut it so the end results is it stays smooth and flat at the ends for until i go to cut it again?
