Umm so awkward pubes question?

I'm 17, just fyi. I used to shave my pubes all the time and it wasn't a problem, but I basically just got lazy over the winter. During this time I met my current boyfriend, and he's kinda the hippie type so it didn't really matter haha. Well...I got annoyed with my pubes and impulsively shaved them all off the other day (I did it the right way too, by cutting them close first and then shaving with a new razor, etc) but for some reason I got really bad razor burn and couldn't get close enough...so basically it's just this red prickly mess. Anyway! I'd feel awkward explaining the situation to my boyfriend, especially because he's only been into my pants (not sex though) 3 or so times...I was on my period last time we were doing stuff so I just told him that and he stayed out, but I can't use that excuse again...advice?
